Crime & Safety

Porch Pirate Alert: This man was caught on video taking a package from a residence on Jamie Dr. in November. Keep an eye out for car like this and please help provide us more identifying information about the car (license, make, etc.) so we may further identify the person in this photo to provide to police.

Please send any photo or video related to this, or any visual evidence of any theft in Lakewood to KFletcherHOA@gmail.com and lets stay vigilant about identifying and catching these thieves.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2024: OFFICER DIXON RETURNS

Officer K. Dixon of the Grand Prairie Police Department again met for a chat with Lakewood residents by the park and pond. Doughnuts and juice were provided by the HOA and it was very well attended.

Officer Dixon updated residents on recent crime trends and safety measures. Above all, he reiterated that Lakewood remains one of the safest and most crime-free neighborhoods in all of Grand Prairie. Here are the current statistics of crime specific to Lakewood and of Grand Prairie, which is now a city of nearly 205,000. 2024 is year-to-date through the month of August.

One item Officer Dixon stressed is for residents who do not park in a garage, who park in either a driveway or on the street, DO NOT leave your car parked with a garage door opener in the car. Thieves, if not finding what they like in the car, are opening garages (*when the opener is available*) and helping themselves inside. This happened as recently as August in the Mira Lagos neighborhood, and resulted in a homeowner and suspected thief firing shots at one another.

Officer Dixon also noted that one recent crime trend is for bad people to follow residents home. If you notice or feel as if you are being followed, Officer Dixon noted that criminals usually don’t know where you live – so don’t lead them there! If given the chance, either call 911, or drive directly to the central police station on Hwy. 161 and Arkansas and then call 911 if the stranger is still following.

MAY 3, 2024 / NEIGHBORHOOD ADVISORY

To our fellow home owners,

On Wednesday, May 1st, the Arlington Police Department requested the assistance of Grand Prairie Police SWAT to issue a felony warrant to a resident on Jamie Dr. The resident then barricaded himself inside the home. Additional GPPD units were then called in to assist. The incident ultimately was resolved with an arrest and no harm done to any other resident or property.

As alarming as this incident was for many home owners, we are thankful for the decisive actions of Grand Prairie Police to assist in this matter. It is worth noting that your HOA is diligent in working with the GPPD. If you scroll down a little further on this Crime & Safety page, you’ll see a rundown of our recent resident meeting with Officer K. Dixon at our community park on March 2nd to discuss home and neighborhood safety and recent crime trends around Grand Prairie. If you scroll further down you’ll see actual crime statistics for Lakewood over the last five years, showing conclusively that we remain in one of the safest and low-crime neighborhoods in all of south Dallas County.

We are working with the GPPD on getting Crime Watch signs installed around the neighborhood. Two signs have been provided, but we are seeking to order more – along with poles to place the signs upon. Signs cannot be placed just anywhere, especially on light posts, stop signs or street signs, so poles must be purchased and planted to complete this project. Plus, holes can’t be dug anywhere, so we have to coordinate with Atmos to mark gas lines before we can proceed. SBB Management is assisting our efforts. Our hope is to have a sign at each of the 10 entry points into our neighborhood from both sides of Camp Wisdom Rd. We know many residents share our concerns, but the GPPD has been very cooperative and supportive of our HOA’s desire to help keep our neighborhood safe.

Also, if you have home security cameras and want to proactively assist in an actual neighborhood crime watch, you can do so through the GPPD’s Eagle Eyes Camera Program. By registering your security cameras with the GPPD you may be called upon to anonymously help provide surveillance video that could assist the police in a nearby crime. For more information about this program and to register your cameras, click here.

Sincerely,

Your HOA Board of Directors and neighbors

On March 2, 2024, Grand Prairie Police Community Services Officer K. Dixon, a former Lakewood resident, spoke to Lakewood homeowners at the community park.

Some key takeaways from Officer Dixon’s visit:

*With the new completion of the Camp Wisdom Rd. extension from Robinson Rd. to Beltline/FM 1382, the police (and our homeowners!) are seeing increased traffic and speeding on Camp Wisdom Rd. There will be extra patrols busting speeders in the coming weeks and months. Please note: the police will not give slack to Lakewood residents. Speeding is speeding and the tickets will start flowing promptly!

*There has been increased criminal activity around the four banks at Camp Wisdom Rd. and Hwy 360. Police are advising of individuals who are watching customers leave banks who they can then trail to steal money. Officer Dixon noted that criminals don’t always watch from the bank parking lots. They may be across the street with binoculars. Be careful and vigilant not to carry large sums of cash in obvious bank bags or anything similar. Expect to be watched coming out of the bank and act accordingly. Be prepared to leave the bank that isn’t obviously for large sums of cash. Be aware of your surroundings, not just on the bank property, but especially while driving to your next destination. Criminal behavior related to these crimes include bumping cars, faking accidents in order to get people out of their cars and vulnerable.

Police are seeing increased criminal activity on citizens leaving these closely gathered collection of banks at Camp Wisdom Rd. and Hwy 360 – the Texas Trust Credit Union, Bank of America, Chase Bank and Wells Fargo. Criminals may be watching from a distance looking for people leaving with large sums of cash.

*There are increasing numbers of home owners engaging in short-term rentals (putting houses for rent via Airbnb, Vrbo, and the like). Your Lakewood HOA is trying to take steps to ban this activity in our community, but it takes a change of the bylaws and covenants, which takes a 2/3 majority vote of *ALL* homeowners, which is extremely difficult. In the meantime, Officer Dixon advises to alert GPPD of residences engaged in short-term rentals. There are a list of city ordinances these properties must comply with. The City and GPPD cannot enforce these rules unless they know of a property that is a short-term rental. Please alert GPPD through its non-emergency line at (972) 237-8790.

*South of Bardin Rd., Lakewood is a part of the GPPD’s lowest crime area in the entire city. However, crime and criminal behavior is going to happen. Here’s a look at crime specifically in the Lakewood community over the last few years:
